Hello, I’m Dr. Neal Schultz
[pause]
and welcome to DermTV.
When I tell my patients that I am going to
explain to them how to use their
cleanser and toner, they often look at me
kind of funny like, who doesn’t
know how to use a cleanser and toner? Let
me tell you how to get the best
results from your cleanser and your toner.
First of all, when you’re using
your cleanser, use warm water, not hot, not
cold. Hot water over-dries your
skin and cold water makes it difficult to
get all of the dirt and debris
off that the cleanser is capable of removing.
First start by wetting your
face with warm water and then put some of
the cleanser on the tips of your
fingers, then gently massage that cleanser
with the tips of your fingers
into your face for 20-30 seconds. Rinse with
warm water and pat dry, then
take your toner and, to me, toners and astringents
are the same, their
purpose is to increase the effectiveness of
the cleanser, to synergize with
the cleanser at removing any oils, debris
or dead cells the cleanser didn’t
get off or to even remove the cleanser that
the water didn’t get off. Take
your toner and, instead of taking a round
cotton ball which absorbs just
too much of the toner and wastes toner, instead
take a thin cotton pad, put
some toner on the cotton pad, and with this
cotton pad , gently wipe your
face several times and, as you do, you’ll
see hues of yellow, or brown or
even gray coming onto the pad. That’s the
material that the toner is
helping to remove. Keep wiping until you stop
removing that color, wait a
few seconds for the toner to dry, and then
pat your skin dry. I promise, if
you use this technique, you’ll get the best
results from your cleanser and
toner.
