Hi, I'm Danny Page and I'm here on behalf
of Expert Village. In this series I'm going
to teach you how to draw basic cartoon characters.
Alright, so at this stage of the game we have
our rough outline. So the first thing that
I like to do when finally going at the character
with you know the permanent pen and a lot
of you know animators and cartoonists will
choose a different starting point, but me
personally, I like to start with the eyes.
So what we're going to do now is flip back
to our experimental page and basically we're
just going to start you know throwing down
ideas. Your most basic one is the two big
holes, the pupils in the middle. It's like
the safest choice. Sometimes you can make
them a little bit smaller, wider apart, this
is just you know, throw down a bunch of different
looks and see what sticks. Like some people
like to make them a little bit more triangular.
Kind of gives a little bit of sad quality
to them. Then one other cool thing you going
to want to do is when you draw the eyes, particularly
when you're paying attention and going over
the pupils, you're going to want to leave
a little bit of space of white in there because
it gives them that life like glint that most
people actually have in their eyes. If you
look at it closely, just about every single
cartoon ever done you can always see a little
glint that the animators leave in their eyes.
Suppose to be a reflection from whatever the
light source in the room is. That's very important
to do. So always when you're drawing the eyes
leave a little bit of white there. Just give
them that little bit of glint. It helps them
come alive and leap off the page. So now that
we have just some random ideas and thoughts
down on paper what we might like to do, we're
going to go back to our main page, we're going
to start off with the eyes and for the purpose
of this video I'm going to make them big,
big clear eyes so that you can really see
what it is I'm doing here. I'm going to make
him looking right at you. And just kind of
get in there and get the eyes looking exactly
the way you want to. Another important thing
about eyes, and one thing that people don't
think about, most of the time when they're
drawing cartoons, is the eyebrows are a lot
of what makes up the personality of the final
character. So in this case, we?re going to
go for straight happy eyes. This case I?m
going to also, the eyebrows, I'm going to
give them a touch of relaxed expression and
that will be the foundation for our character.
